“Results... Everyday” is a monthly book review for business owners who share the philosophy of building a business to contribute to your Spiritual Objective and the Company’s Strategic Vision.”
The Question - Clark, from a restoration company, asks the difference between the three business owner types and which one is more desirable for an owner.
The Recommendation for "Working On It" - Some stumbled into business, some planned it, and some followed a circuitous route that couldn't possibly be duplicated. Many entered their business as the technician. They used processes, probabilities, education and their wits to succeed where many have failed. They know the technical nature of the business, they do it everyday; over and over again. They get up every morning, go to the office, and know exactly what the day will look like. They will answer the same question and give the same direction to employees or co-workers. They will do the same thing as yesterday, but now its today. They wish that someone would listen so they wouldn't have to say the same thing over and over again. Gotta do it again, say it again, do it again, say it again. Why don't they get it! Some entered the business as the manager. They plan, quantify, and implement it with and through others. They know how to keep the office running, how to pick the next employee, how to juggle more clients, more deals and more responsibility. They came up the hard way. The others didn't listen to them. They know there's a better way to do it, if only people would listen. They sit down with the new hire and tell them not to make a mistake. We have our reputation! If you have any questions, just ask me. In the meantime, they're off to the next crisis; gotta go, busy, busy, busy. Some entered the business as an entrepreneur. They have great ideas. They know the technical work, they think. They know how to manage, they think. However, they have this great new idea, an idea that will bring true value, honor and integrity to the business, clients and employees. Let's go! Wait, I have another idea, let's go do that! Most of us identify more with one than the others. Yet, there is an entrepreneur, manager and technician in all of us. We need all three to have a successful business. However, since business is a reflection of the owner, the business operates as the owner operates.
It doesn't have to be that way. There is a predictable process for you to grow, expand and improve each of these qualities within you and therefore within your business. The process begins with you. The process begins with accountability. And, that is the subject we will address next month.
