During an exchange with a prospect, I was asked to write about our business development principles and philosophy of creating a business to serve your life. The Prospect wants to know, how one begins to create the entrepreneurial space between the dream and the reality.
The Principles require reflection; reflection on how you are and how you want to be. Your work, the work of the work, will be to create the internal space to doing life differently. When you occupy the space between, you will move closer to what you truly want in your life. This is a journey, a process that we hope will continue for the rest of your life.
The journey is about substance and structure. It is about your understanding the space between, then spending the time and the effort to integrate the Principles in your life and your business. It is a process, not an event. It is about penetration, not coating.

Life
A business is more than just a job - or it should be. Your business should be a way to get more of what you want out of your life. In order to do that you either have to create a business that frees you to do the things that give you the life you want, or you have to create a business within which you can achieve the satisfaction and sense of fulfillment you want.
In order to create a business that will serve your life, you must discover your Spiritual Objective. It is your innermost driving force: your source of energy, your commitment, and your vision.
Lead
The key elements of leadership are vision, action, and spirit.
Vision is the owner's dream for the future, what the business will be like when it is fully developed. Vision is the owner's business philosophy - his belief. You will integrate your Vision into the day-to-day decisions made in your business. Dual vision is keeping your eye on the future as you make the minute-by-minute decisions in your business.
Action is walking the talk. It is what you do and how you do it. It's taking an integrated approach to business development and problem solving. It is being the role model for employees. It's communicating, it's delegating, it's holding people accountable, and it's getting results.
Spirit is attitude. It's the way you do what you do. It's energy, inspiration and the half full glass. It is respect and concern for people. It's the Mythic Story that is related to inspire those around you. It's ethical behavior, integrity and your Spiritual Objective that makes you the role model for employees.
Discover
Discovery is the business development cycle of Creation, Validation, and Replication.
- Creation is the process of improving existing systems or creating new systems to address a problem or new process.
- Validation is the cost/benefit analysis of that creation to determine the effectiveness of the system from both a qualitative perspective and quantitative perspective.
- Replication is the predictable way of doing what needs to be done; the same way, the same time, until such time as you improve the process.
Discovery never ends. It is the path to your Strategic Vision; your competitive edge; your Spiritual Objective.
